“Don’t Miss” Wine Events (Apr 25-27, 2008)
April 23, 2008 |
Here are the events that we recommend for this weekend. Click on the title of an event to visit that event’s official web site.
- California
- Chalone (near Big Sur)
- Pinnacles Wine Festival: April 26, 11:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Inn at the Pinnacles; tickets are $60 per person. This festival celebrates wines hailing from California’s Chalone appellation. Uh, Cha-whah? It may be news to some of you that Chalone is more than just the name of a well known winery (i.e., Chalone Vineyard, which participated in the now famous 1976 Paris Tasting), but check out what good things Appellation America had to say about it by clicking here.
- Santa Cruz Mountains
- Corralitos Wine Trail: May 10, 1 - 5 p.m.; see list of participating wineries by clicking here; tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at the door. One of the participating wineries’ owners was kind enough to give us a heads up about this event, which happens three weekends from now. We’ve been to Alfaro and Windy Oaks previously, and if you attend the event, we wholeheartedly recommend spending some time at those two. Since we have not yet visited any of the other wineries involved, we suggest doing your research before heading out.
- Chalone (near Big Sur)
- New York City
- Shawangunk Wine Trail Wine Tasting and Picnic Hike: April 27, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; click here for departure locations and times; $55 per person. We don’t know much about the wineries involved in this event – other than Warwick Valley, which makes insanely good hard apple cider –but we recall that, when we were living in New York, the idea of exploring local wineries and hiking in the beautiful Hudson Valley would have seemed like the perfect day trip from Manhattan. This event includes round-trip transportation from the UWS and UES, a picnic lunch, wine tasting, and a hike around Lake Minnewaska. We were also intrigued by the opportunity to learn about the fine winemaking techniques that were brought to the region some 300 years ago by French Heugenot settlors.
- Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.: Nothing of interest happening this week. Tune in next Wednesday!
