Question of the Month: Favorite Winery to Visit

March 21st, 2008 · 3 Comments

In case you haven’t noticed, we love talking about wine.  But we also realize that much of the fun achieved from discussing wine is from hearing about other peoples’ experiences, and not just our own.  In fact, if you read Wine Rabbi often, you probably agree!

With the above in mind, we decided that once a month, beginning today, we’ll pose a question for readers to ponder and comment on over the course of the following four weeks.  The point?  To engage as many of the wine lovers out there as possible in conversation so that we all end up learning something new.

Thank heavens for the Internet!

Anyway, answer by posting a comment below, and note that you can always access your, and others’, comments by clicking “Question of the Month” under the “Explore WineRabbi.com” sidebar menu.  Then, please tune in on April 20, 2008 for next month’s topic.

Now, on to our first question:

What is your favorite winery (anywhere) to visit?

How to decide? Favorite wines? Best view? Best overall tasting experience?

Anyway, I’m torn. Ridge is incredible and combines wonderful wines with an amazing view. I’m not too happy that they have a tasting fee, but what can you do?

Unti has an incredible line up of wines and the view on the drive to the winery is beautiful. Once in the barn, though, there’s nothing to look at other than shipping boxes. So, too, with Nalle and Seghesio doesn’t even have a scenic drive going for it (except that you have to drive back from Unti, Nalle and Ridge to get there).

So, I’m going to cheat. The best winery to visit as a member is Joseph Phelps. I went with a friend that was a member at the time and we were definitely given a royal tasting with a view to match.

    Wine Rabbi,

You’re a great leader of the congregation. This is a great question. For my answer I’ve picked a non-traditional winery….Siduri Wines

Adam and Dianna Lee’s winery located in Santa Rosa in Sonoma County is a special and different experience. They operate a simple downhome winery. No flourishes or fancy tasting rooms.

However, a personal tour…often by one of the Lee’s…is a fascinating time. It’s by appointment only and it includes a sampling of wines aging in barrels. A wonderful way to learn about wine and get a sense for upcoming vintages.

They use grapes from throughout Cali and Oregon and have a very robust range of wines including over 27 Pinot Noirs and 12 Syrahs.

    For details, google “Siduri”.

    Easy, http://www.poderecasanova.com/index.html

At the top of a hill in Chianti, the winery owner (who speaks no english) is more than happy to uncork a bottle at any time of the day to share.
